The Friends of Fort Griswold Battlefield have begun planning for the 240th anniversary of The Battle of Groton Heights. As you probably know, this battle took place at Fort Griswold on September 6, 1781. Our special commemoration of the battle will be held on September 5, 2021.
We are planning many great events for the day, which include an encampment, re-enactors on horseback, skirmishes, educational events for families, sutlers, music, and much more. The day will conclude with our annual candlelight ceremony commemorating the sacrifices made by the brave defenders of Fort Griswold on that fateful day.
We want this to be a memorable day at the fort. It will be fun, but also educational and just a little bit solemn. The mission of the Friends has always been to preserve the fort, and to promote its history, so it is with this in mind that we begin planning for this event.
We need your help!
An event of this size has many costs. We are raising funds in a variety of ways, including grant writing, membership drives, fundraisers, sales in our gift shop, and sponsorships. We are also asking friends and neighbors like you directly for help. Your gift will get our fundraising started on a good, solid footing. I can’t emphasize enough just how much your support is needed and appreciated.
If you’d like to become a part of this historic day, please consider a donation to the Friends of Fort Griswold Battlefield. If you’re a good planner, why not join us? If you’re short on time now, we could use your help setting up on the day of the event. Please consider participating in this journey. At the very least, mark your calendar, and visit us on September 5, 2021.
